about

When challenged to find a playful way of enforcing social distancing during the pandemic, the project looked toward the Baianas, iconic women from the Brazilian state of Bahia, recognised for their wide circular skirts, and strong presence in carnival and samba traditions. Traditionally associated with movement, celebration and resistance, the exaggerated silhouette of the Baiana already creates a natural distance around the body. During a moment where physical proximity had become regulated, the skirt became a wearable perimeter. The structure was built from conduit tubing, an overlooked industrial material normally used to guide electrical wires underground. Bent into large circular forms, the tubes recreate the volume and movement of the Baiana’s skirt while physically holding the required distance between people. The project combines cultural memory and social distancing into a single gesture.
