When challenged to find a playful way of enforcing social distancingduring the pandemic, the project looked toward the Baianas, iconic women from the Brazilian state of Bahia, recognised for their widecircular skirts and strong presence in carnival and samba traditions. Traditionally associated with movement, celebration and resistance, theexaggerated silhouette of the Baiana already creates a natural distancearound the body. During a moment where physical proximity hadbecome regulated, the skirt became a wearable perimeter. The structure was built from conduit tubing, an industrial materialnormally used to guide electrical wires underground. Bent into large circular forms, the tubes recreate the volume and movement of theBaiana’s skirt while physically holding the required distance betweenpeople. The project combines cultural memory and social distancing into a single gesture.
